How does this spark come about?

When the plug and socket plug into the moment, the contact area is small, there is a small gap between the plug and socket, forming a loop, generating a strong current, thus instantaneous discharge, spark.That's what we call an arc.


Avoid arc generation

Arc is a normal phenomenon, but it can also cause fires.How can we avoid arc accidents as much as possible?

1. Plug and socket should be free from rust and oxidation.Dust the plug before putting it into the socket.

2. For electrical appliances with their own switches, try to put the switch in the closed state, plug in, and then open the switch.Take a notebook

Ex. :

First turn off the switch of the power socket;

Connect the notebook power adapter to the power socket, and then open the socket switch.

Connect the dc plug end of the power adapter to the notebook.

3. High power electrical appliances should not be inserted in the same board to avoid danger.

Arc: the phenomenon of continuous spark discharge caused by the breakdown of air when two electrodes are close to a certain distance.Arc is generally generated at the moment of opening and closing. All mechanical switches will produce arc. Only through materials and structures can the probability and size of arc be reduced.In the process of switch disconnection, due to the movement of the moving contact, the contact gap of the switch becomes the channel of current, and the medium (air) between the contact gaps is broken down to form an arc.The smaller the contact area between the moving and static contacts, the easier the arc.

The main reason for arc generation is that the gas (or air) contains a small number of positive and negative ions. Under the effect of applied voltage, the ions accelerate their movement, and the number of ions increases greatly in the collision, and the directional movement of these ions in the electric field forms the current.The current passing through the gas is accompanied by a strong heating process, so that the neutral gas molecules in the current channel are ionized to form plasma.This has a strong sound, light and thermal tip arc discharge, is the formation of the arc process.
